My Experience with Art

My name is Bryton Omondi. I am 13, years old in Kibera slums Nairobi. I am so passionate in drawing. I am confident to say that all my skills have enhanced because of the support we are getting from our art teachers who are Wesley and Scar.

Since I joined this project, I have seen many personal changes in my life by helping me gain confidence and improving self esteem as it keeps me busy.

According to the time I have been in this project, I can say that our space is quite less for all students because we have new students everyday.

Otherwise with all my happiness, I would like to say thanks to Luca, Donna, Graziano, Calvin, Wesley and other people who are trying to help us. I can already see myself as a superstar in art.

Art is a powerful tool for change

Hello, my name is Joseph Otieno. I am twenty years old. I live in Kibera slums  and I am so talented in art ever since my primary school.

I am so lucky to have joined the organization with name "Future Within C.B.O founded by Calvin Juma. It offers a very special skills including art education, lifeskills and other important mentorship programs. I feel so lucky because my talent is drawing. I can draw clearly well with pencil but could also do wonders on paintings.
Thanks to our art  teachers, for helping us become confidence with our at work and for bringing out the best to other young artists in our projects.
The number of students in our iniatives are growing day by day since it's just located beside the road. The organization has also begin to support other activities like dancing which is so important as it helps us to overcome shyness and social anxiety.

The organization is moving well but there are challenges facing us. The major challenge being, the room is too small to accommodate all of us and mostly it is so difficult to perform and practice dance in our room because it's too congested. The room is small but serve several programs. We wish it could be abit enlarged, so we can have space both for performing arts, dance holding meetings and for lifeskills trainings.
I would like to finish by thanking our well wishers for their support and to let them know how this iniative means the world to us.
This is organization is supporting dreams in the slums and need outside support to grow efficiently.
Thank you all.

ENJOY THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE FOR ONE DAY YOU'LL LOOK BACK AND REALIZE THEY WERE BIG THINGS

Hello guys my name is Mary Akinyi Omondi. I joined this project few days ago after realizing how important it could be in my life. I am writing this letter to appreciate art because it is in important in my life. I am talented and passionate in dancing and I find this as a golden opportunity to showcase my talent. I hope through this project I can achieve my goal and improve my talent so that I can also help other people outside there.

My goal is to improve the condition of the environment without compromising the quality of living. I am confident that this training will help to achieve some skills and qualities that are most suitable to achieve.

I also have a strong passion for providing support and assist in a way that benefits both personally and professionally. I also enjoy looking for solutions to common problems which I feel are great in our community.

I hope we can grow together and inspire change in the world.

Thanks you

SUPPORTING DREAM IS A KEY TO SUCCESS,.

Hello , I am Leakey jeff ouma, 18 years of age and am a resident in kibera slums nairobi. i I am persionate in drawing in  and due to that i decided to join this organisation named FUTURE WITHIN C.B,O  Since it supports art work.I like it while am at this place because it makes me perfect my art skills through teacher wesley and teacher scar .

So far so good with this organisation coz since i joined this place , there are great improvements made  as the organisation is now capable of  supporting other talents and skills such as dancing.
There are also mentorship sessions done to peers which creates positive minds and also acts as a motivational tool to young adolescents.
Through my observation,my major challenge and my main issue of concern is about space available in this organisation.

Future within is an organisation with over forty young people with different talents and skills.the room available is inadequate to accommodate  all the people and also all the activities done
It would be better if more rooms would be provided for effective running of activities.
more thanks to future within for supporting our dream through nataring our talents..

thank you.

Hi from Whitney Aryango

Hey! Hi, My name is Whitney Aryango.

I live in Kibra and I am formed in Olimpic sec. school. I am 14 years old.

The first day that I saw people going art I was wondering what they are going to do there, since I went to see.

I saw that it was a very interesting programme.

It keeps people busy; if it was not for art, some boys would have joined bad company, example being a drug dealer.

I hope that all will continue with that heart.

Art has helped us in some ways, example drawing. Since not everybody are interested in drawing, they have brought dance club.

Thank you all for helping Kibra children.

Collaboration through art

I am Emmanuel Ayieko from Kibera Kenya, a good friend to Calvin Juma the founder of Future Within Community Based Organization.

I am happy to be part of this project and I am an automotive mechanic by profession.

With the help of our supporter Mr Luca, we are seeing a great change as our kids in Kibera are improving on their drawing talents.

Our aim is to change the lives of poor children in Kibera and nurture their talents. We will be very happy to get more well wishers with the same passion and similar interests of transforming the world through supporting artistic expression.

Bless you all.

EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSE

 EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSE

Once there was a boy called Lucas.

Lucas was hard working and also very respectful of his elders. He had a talent in drawing and had not been initiated in any drug abuse. As time passed, Lucas continued to be of good character.

One day he was on his way to market when he saw a group of boys smoking in a corner. The boys called him. Lucas was shocked, but decided to go to them.

The boys tried to give Lucas drugs, but he refused, showing that he was strong and brave and continued on his journey to market.

The following morning Lucas woke up early to go to school.

He had his breakfast and set off quickly so he wouldn’t be late.

When he arrived at school, he was surprised to find that the pupils were in assembly. He was lucky to find that the pupils were cheering for him.

The head teacher called him to come forward and he stood there waiting for the next instructions. He was told that he had leading in the exams and he had to give the pupils advice and tips on passing exams.

Lucas told them that the way to pass exams is to avoid groups of gangsters that smoke cigarettes and bhang, drink alcohol, and have sex with every girl.

When Lucas had finished, the pupils applauded, then went back to their classrooms.

It was evening when Lucas was on his way back home. When he arrived home, he found that there had been a quarrel.

His father had been drinking and brought violence to his home.

He didn’t greet anybody. He always greeted everyone when he came home, but that night everything changed.

His father was shouting and telling Lucas’ mother that she had stolen his money. He was beating her, and Lucas could not help her, because he was too young to confront him. He couldn’t do anything, because his father was a strong man.

Later, a few hours after beating his mother, his father went to sleep.

Lucas did not feel good.

Although he could not tell his friends that his mother had been beaten by his father, he saw it as a big issue, but his mother didn’t see it as a big issue.

Time passed. Lucas was growing up and becoming a big boy, going through different stages of adolescence and lost control of himself.

In school Lucas was failing his exams and didn’t listen to advice. Then he started drinking and smoking.

He had a girlfriend and wanted to have sex, and he would not respect his parents at all.  He used to smoke and drink alcohol with his friends.

One day Lucas and his friends went to a man’s garden to steal mangoes. There were lots of fruits, so they decided to go ahead with their plan. Lucas decided to climb on top of the tree, not worrying that they could be found stealing.

Suddenly, the owner of the garden came out and when he saw them, he brought a cane.

Lucas saw him and told his friends that the man was coming, so they ran away and he was left there. He was scared and decided to jump off the tree,

but couldn’t run, because one  of his legs was badly twisted. He started to cry. When the man found Lucas on the ground crying, he decide to take him to the hospital.

In the hospital the doctor called his parents and told them that Lucas had lost a leg and a kidney because of too much smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol.

Everyone was shocked to hear it and that he had HIV and AIDS.

They heard Lucas shout in the room and entered to see what had happened.

Lucas was crying, and asked his parents, “Where is my leg?”

His parents explained what the doctor had told them, ad Lucas knew that he would never walk again.

A few years later, he was called by one of the schools in the city to give them advice. The podium was set, many people had gathered from everywhere, the school band ushered the guest of honour with wonderful songs to set the mood and prepare them to hear Lucas advice to both parents and pupils.

Then Lucas stepped onto the podium with a smile on his face. People were smiling and cheering.

Lucas began “Guest of honour, parents, teachers, pupils, ladies and gentlemen, good morning! It is my great pleasure to welcome all of you to this school. I wish to especially thank our guest of honour, Calvin, for gracing this occasion. Thank you for taking the time to be with us today.

Today is an important day and everyone has been waiting for it. The school of the future opened its doors exactly twelve years ago. It started in Calvin’s house, with three children. By the end of the year the number of pupils increased to forty. Calvin is a great man and now he had built a room to accommodate the growing number of pupils and bring new teachers.

Thank you Calvin, education is the best thing, but the fruits it bears are sweeter, so it was up to us to work hard at school.

I was a hard working pupil and did very well, but a group of friends lead me astray and I was out of control.

I planned to go to a good secondary school, but I couldn’t go, because I was using drugs and couldn’t read, and started failing exams. I couldn’t do two things at the same time and decided to go with my friends to steal, and that’s how I lost a leg.

I also contracted HIV and AIDS by having sex with lots of girls.

Remember to make hay while the sun shines, and don’t forget that empty vessels make the most noise”, Luca concluded.

Everybody’s heart was full of joy as they walked out of the field.

Lucas knew that he had learned a great lesson that he would never forget.

                                                    THE END
